Euthanasia: The Human Interruption of Natures Course :: Free Euthanasia Essay
Step into the shoes of 60 year old Mrs. Harris for just a moment. She was diagnosed with a severe case of diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis in both of her knees. Due to her high blood pressure, Mrs. Harris was at an intense risk of having a stroke. In addition to her health problems, she weighed in at approximately two hundred pounds, which limited her mobility. As her health began to deteriorate, so did her quality of life. Mrs. Harris did not want to hold onto life by a small thread of hope. She once pleaded to her son, " If I should start to go, don't try and save me. And don't put me in a convalescent home. That's a place of the living dead," (qtd. in Humphry, "Let" 64). As time passed, Mrs. Harris "suffered a massive strokeâ⬠¦ and was left completely paralyzed on her right side and could neither speak nor eat." One week later, the doctor announced that Mrs. Harris would never be able to speak or walk again. As though this wasn't bad enough, she suffered from her second stroke that same night. Somehow, doctors were able to stabilize her but she was pretty much a vegetable at this point (65). Now the true question was raised of whether or not to hang on to the little bit of life she had left. Between all of the loops from her dramatic health roller coaster, her son's health began to downfall as well. After many attempts to comfort her during her downward spiral, it was time to give up. He gave into the anger, frustration and sadness by shooting her in the head and ending her life (75). Thus, the controversy lies here. Was this act of euthanasia wrong or justified? How do most people wish for their death to occur? With pain, agony, suffering, and the thought of their loved ones witnessing such misery? Of course not! Most people want to die quickly and peacefully such as in the case of Mrs. Harris. It is believed that euthanasia should be legalized to some degree. This argument inquires that if you should ever have a loved one that is suffering and death is certain, you should have the choice to ease their pain if that is their desire. It is quite understandable the no one wishes to die painfully or continue in a state of constant discomfort.

Captial Punishment Essay -- essays research papers
I agree with the law that people who commit crimes need to be punished for their wrong doings. However, I do not agree with the way that the law thinks that problem should be handled through the death penalty. The bad part about the death penalty is that innocent people are executed, there is racism in the death penalty, the mentally retarded are executed, and the death penalty is costly. As long as the death penalty is maintained, the risk of executing the innocent can never be eliminated. People who are found guilty and sentenced to death row can truly be innocent. It is said by Amnesty International a campaigning movement that works to promote all the human rights that, "since 1973 at least 53 men were released from death row in seventeen US stated due to significant evidence of their innocence and that some prisoners escaped execution by minutes but 23 were actually executed". Everyone is not perfect. People can fall victim to false testimonies, mistaken identification, community prejudice, and pressure. These are just a few ways in which a person can be found guilty of a crime. These are crucial mistakes that can happen and a person can quickly be sentenced to the death penalty without second thought. Innocent people should not have to experience situations so terrifying which could lead a person to flip out and go insane. There is no reason for an inno cent person to be killed for being at the wrong place at the wrong time or for some other ridiculous mis...

The Earth Essay -- essays research papers
Did u know that our planet, Earth wasnââ¬â¢t always thought of as a planet? Until the sixteenth century when Capernicus figured out that the Earth was another planet, which revolved around the sun, Greek astronomers thought the Earth was the center of the solar system. Also Earth is the only planet that its name didnââ¬â¢t come from Greek/Roman mythology. à à à à à When earth was first discovered, astronomers were only able to study it with out spacecraft. It was not until the twentieth century that we had maps of the entire planet. Pictures taken of the planet are very important, not only because they aid in weather predictions, but they are also very beautiful. à à à à à The Earth is divided into seven layers: the crust, upper mantle, transition region, lower mantle, Dâ⬠layer, outer core, and inner core. ââ¬Å"The crust varies considerably in thickness; it is thinner under the oceans, and thicker under the continentsâ⬠. (Arnett1) The inner core and crust are solid, and the outer core and mantel layers are plastic or semi-fluid. Most of Earthââ¬â¢s mass is in its mantle and the rest is in its core. à à à à à Most of the core is made of iron, but there may be lighter elements in it too. Temperatures at the center of the core can be as high as 7500K, which is hotter than the surface of the sun. à à à à à ââ¬Å"Unlike the other rocky planets, Earthââ¬â¢s crust is divided into several separate plates, which float around inde...

Succubus Shadows Chapter 19
ââ¬Å"Real,â⬠I gasped out. ââ¬Å"That wasâ⬠¦real. Seth didn't give in to temptation. Seth stayed with Maddie.â⬠ââ¬Å"Maybe,â⬠said One. The instinct to claw his eyes out rose within me, strong and sudden. It was animal and rash ââ¬â and impossible since I had no form here. It was an urge I'd had on more than one occasion with the Oneroi. ââ¬Å"True. It was true.â⬠This was like a child's game with them, over and over. Or maybe the true/false section on the SAT. Circles. Circles. My life was a circle. ââ¬Å"And Jeromeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The end of the dream came to me where my boss had spirited Seth away. ââ¬Å"He's coming for me. He took Seth. They're going to do that ritual. Erik's going to set it up.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. And he's going to fail.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, he won't,â⬠I cried. Every ounce of me had become desperation: voice, mind, soul. ââ¬Å"Jerome will come for me. He'll save me.â⬠ââ¬Å"No one is coming for you,â⬠said Two. ââ¬Å"They will try, but they will fail.â⬠Again, they sent me back to my world, and as much as I yearned for familiar faces, the doubt and uncertainty the Oneroi kept bringing up filled me with a despairing kind of confusion. I was at Erik's. And apparently, so was everyone else. His store had a large back room used for storage that I'd only once caught a glimpse of. It reminded me of a garage, with unfinished cement floors and plain drywall on the sides. A small table held a bowl of burning incense that made the air hazy. The edges of the room were stacked with boxes and crates that appeared to have been shoved to create an empty space around the edge of the room. Also along the edges was the Seattle immortal club: Hugh, Cody, Peter, Carter, and even Mei. Roman was probably there too, hidden because of Mei. In the center of the room, Erik was drawing chalk patterns on the floor. Jerome stood nearby, and Seth hovered uneasily between them and my friends along the wall. I think he was having a hard time deciding who was safest. If not for Mei, he probably would have chosen my friends. Mei watched Erik and Jerome with disapproval, her nearly black eyes narrowed and brick-red lips pursed. At last, she uncrossed her arms and strode toward the center, her stiletto heels clicking loudly against the cement. Seth scurried out of her way, retreating to the safety of my friends. ââ¬Å"This is ridiculous,â⬠Mei said. ââ¬Å"You're wasting everyone's time. Even with all of themâ⬠ââ¬â she gestured to the wall gang ââ¬â ââ¬Å"it's not enough to bring her back. You need to report it and get another succubus.â⬠ââ¬Å"I report it, and there'll be another archdemon here too.â⬠Jerome cut her a look. ââ¬Å"I'm kind of surprised you haven't done that already.â⬠Good point. As his underling, Mei obeyed him, but she was ambitious. If Jerome got in trouble for losing me, it could be to her advantage. ââ¬Å"I don't need to,â⬠she said flatly. ââ¬Å"You'll be telling them yourself soon. Why do I have to be here? I have no connection to her.â⬠ââ¬Å"Because I told you to! Stop arguing.â⬠Jerome glared at her, and the two demons locked gazes. At last, Mei gave a sharp nod, but it didn't seem like she gave in because of his authority. It was more like he'd communicated something, and she was acknowledging it. She returned to the side of the room, opposite my friends now. Erik had to lean and get on his knees for a lot of his chalk work, something that had to be agony on his back. With a sigh, he finally stood up and examined his design. It showed two large concentric circles, filled and surrounded with a number of arcane symbols. Some I knew; some I didn't. Jerome studied the pattern too, and for the first time ever, my boss lookedâ⬠¦nervous. ââ¬Å"Is it ready?â⬠he demanded. Erik nodded, one hand absentmindedly rubbing his back. ââ¬Å"Barring the spell itself, yes.â⬠Jerome's eyes fell on Seth, who flinched. ââ¬Å"You,â⬠said the demon. ââ¬Å"Come here.â⬠Seth eyed the pattern almost as uneasily as Jerome had. ââ¬Å"What will happen to me?â⬠ââ¬Å"It won't kill you, if that's what you're worried about. And you can leave the circle whenever you want. Now stop wasting time.â⬠I didn't like hearing Jerome boss Seth around. It stirred up those coals of rage that had been burning within me lately. I even grew angry seeing Seth obey; I kind of wanted him to defy Jerome. A moment later, I tried to banish such thoughts. I needed to save my fury for the Oneroi, not this group. Surely Jerome wasn't lying. Carter, who'd remained quiet throughout all of this, would have called Jerome on it. I hoped. Seth walked over to Jerome's side, careful not to step on any of the chalk lines ââ¬â like how superstitious people avoid cracks on sidewalks. Erik gave Seth a small smile. ââ¬Å"He's right, Mr. Mortensen. This won't hurt you. Though it will beâ⬠¦strange.â⬠Mei suddenly went rigid again. ââ¬Å"Him? That's all you're using? Jerome, one person can't ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Enough!â⬠roared Jerome. ââ¬Å"I'm tired of listening to everyone backtalk me. Can we get on with this?â⬠Erik nodded and walked over to the table with the incense. There was also a small bowl of water and a long, roughly hewn piece of stone. Smoky quartz, I thought. Erik picked it up carefully, reverently. He pushed the tip of the wand into the smoldering incense, and then held it up so the smoke could swathe it. A couple seconds later, he dipped the wand's end into the water. When that was completed, he began carrying the wand to the circle. ââ¬Å"Wait,â⬠Carter suddenly said. He straightened up from where he'd been slouching against some boxes. ââ¬Å"I'm going in too.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're all crazy,â⬠muttered Mei. ââ¬Å"She has a point,â⬠said Jerome. ââ¬Å"If you're in here ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I know, I know,â⬠said Carter, stepping over the lines to join Jerome. ââ¬Å"And I also know what might come out.â⬠The two of them looked at each other, more silent messages passing, and then neither spoke again. Erik returned to the circle's center, holding the wand up high. Both Carter and Jerome had moved as far from the humans as possible without crossing the inner circle. As Erik's arms reached heavenward, he suddenly didn't seem like a weak old man. True, his body was frail and growing gaunter every day, but as he stood there and began chanting, he became so much more than human. Dante was a better magician when it came down to it, but Erik wasn't without his own power, even if rarely used. If I'd been there in the flesh, I would have felt the magic he was summoning. Knowing it was there almost made me believe I could see it. He finished his chant, spoken in words I only knew a little of, and then walked around the circle. He touched it in four spots with the wand, all equidistant from each other. The instant his wand touched the fourth spot, every immortal in the room suddenly flinched and looked uncomfortable ââ¬â even the greater ones. Seth mostly looked confused. As a disconnected observer, my view was like Seth's. I saw nothing happen either. But I realized then that if I'd been there, I would have felt what all the other immortals had as well. Erik had locked the circle, slamming invisible walls into place. All magical circles were different, but he'd told Seth that he could cross out ââ¬â meaning this was a circle to keep only immortals in. It wasn't exactly like a summoning. Summonings required massive amounts of magic because they were enslaving an immortal against his or her will. This circle was a prison too, but it required less magic because the immortals had entered it by choice. Jerome and Carter had just knowingly allowed themselves to be entrapped. This was why he wanted Mei around. For an unscrupulous magic user ââ¬â say, like Dante ââ¬â this was a golden opportunity. Two imprisoned greater immortals? It had infinite possibilities for a magician. Whatever Erik was doing here, I didn't believe he'd abuse this situation. But Jerome, being a demon, didn't trust anyone. Jerome had wanted Mei on hand to do some smiting if Erik wouldn't release his prisoners. Of course, she would be powerless to do anything until Erik left the circle ââ¬â which he'd have to do eventually. If they were all trying to rescue me, though, Erik couldn't have created this circle with the intent of trapping Jerome and Carter specifically. The angel's words came back to me: I also know what might come out. Erik stood in front of Seth, who was growing more nervous by the second. The strain in Erik's face showed the power he was keeping in check. He couldn't play kindly old man right now, but he did what he could. ââ¬Å"Do you care about Miss Kincaid?â⬠he asked Seth. ââ¬Å"Do you want to save her?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠answered Seth swiftly. ââ¬Å"Then you must think about her. Focus every ounce of your being on her. Imagine her. Cry out for her. There must be no other thoughts in your head ââ¬â only her.â⬠Seth looked puzzled but nodded. Erik turned to Jerome and Carter. ââ¬Å"And you must stop him from going in entirely. You can't enter yourselves, but you can keep him here. You have to, or you'll lose both of them.â⬠Erik waited for no acknowledgment from the angel and demon. He held up his wand again and touched Seth on his forehead, both cheeks, and chin. Seth shivered. ââ¬Å"Remember,â⬠said Erik. ââ¬Å"When the gate opens, think of her. Only her. Reach for her. And when you find her, do not let go.â⬠ââ¬Å"Gate?â⬠asked Seth. ââ¬Å"What ââ¬â ââ¬Å" But Erik was chanting again, and a wind emerged out of nowhere, ruffling the hair of those in the circles. His voice grew more and more powerful, and then ââ¬â I was back with the Oneroi. ââ¬Å"What happened?â⬠I exclaimed. For the millionth time, I wished I could beat on the walls of my prison. I wanted to claw their eyes out again. I wanted to choke them. ââ¬Å"Show me what happens!â⬠ââ¬Å"Failure,â⬠said One. ââ¬Å"They won't succeed,â⬠added Two. ââ¬Å"The demoness was correct. A dozen humans who loved you couldn't reach you, let alone ââ¬â ââ¬Å" He stopped speaking. His eyes met One's, and then both glanced around as though searching for something. I tried to see what they saw or heard, but there was nothing for me. Only blackness and silence. Then, I felt the stirring of another dream coming over me. The dark world started to go blurry, and both Oneroi jerked their heads toward me. ââ¬Å"No!â⬠exclaimed Two, extending his hand. Everything grew clear again. I didn't dream. I stayed where I was. Georgina. My name. For the first time in ââ¬â well, I had no idea how many days ââ¬â I heard something that wasn't the Oneroi. It was so faint, a whisper lost on the wind. My name. One of them, at least. I couldn't tell where it came from, but every part of me tried to focus on it, to figure out its origin. Georgina. ââ¬Å"Yes?â⬠I said aloud. ââ¬Å"I'm here!â⬠The world grew blurry again. I didn't hear my name, but it was like the siren song all over again. Music without sound, colors without description. ââ¬Å"Stop this!â⬠cried One. I had never heard the Oneroi raise their voices. They always spoke in those low, sly tones. But they were pretty upset now. ââ¬Å"Fight it!â⬠This was Two, speaking to One. ââ¬Å"Join me! Don't let it ââ¬â ââ¬Å" I left them for another dream. Or, well, more like another place. No, it wasn't even a place. It was like I was floating in space, in a nebula. Perhaps a hurricane was a more accurate way to describe it because things were swirling around me and blowing past. Wisps of smoke. Bits of colors. Brilliant stars. Some touched me. Some went through me. And every time I made contact, I felt an emotion ââ¬â an emotion that wasn't my own. Happiness. Terror. With that emotion came a brief flash of an image. A green field. An airplane. A monster. It was a snowstorm of stimuli. I was lost and adrift, almost more scared than in my prison with the Oneroi. At least that had had some substance, no matter how insignificant. But thisâ⬠¦what was this? Every once in a while, it would start to dissolve to black, like I might be returning to the boxâ⬠¦. Then, the darkness would fade, again leaving me helpless in this mad riot of sensation. Georgina. My name again. And with it, that pull. That pull of familiarity. Though I technically had no body here either, I searched for that voice and that pull, looking through the riotous color. Georgina. It was stronger. That sense of summoning. I burned with the need to get to it. It was part of me. It was home. And then, in all that chaos, one light shone brighter than all the others. It was white, pure and pristine amidst the kaleidoscope raining down upon me. I stared at it, reached for it in as much as I could. The world started to fracture to black once again, but it was the last time. I wouldn't return to the box. Not with this light before me. It's hard to say if it became brighter and brighter or if it just grew closer and closer, but suddenly it was before me. It was around me. I was it. Just like when I'd brushed against those other dreams, I had a flash of vision that snapped me briefly from the whirlwind. I was in Seth's arms. Or was I? As he held me, his face seemed to shift over and over to different forms. No, it was him. I would know him anywhere. He was so familiar, and now this close to me, I couldn't let go of him. He was home. Georgina. The voice came again, and it was his. Georgina, don't let go. No. I wasn't letting go. I was never letting go againâ⬠¦. That brief moment of human contact gave way to the starry field of dreams, but this time, I had an anchor. I was with the light. I was the light. I felt it pulling me, but I needed no urging. I would go wherever it took me. I released all control. I had the sensation of floating, of being stretched and reaching forward. Behind me, something tugged at me, but it wasn't strong enough. I was moving forward. Forward and forward and ââ¬â The sound of screaming filled the room. My screaming. Screaming over the pain of being torn apart and reassembled. Pain from being stripped of all energy within me. I was weak. Raw. Nothing. What room was this? I saw faces. Faces near me, faces along the room's wall. They looked at me like they knew me. Did they? Did I know them? My legs buckled underneath me, weak like a colt's. One of the men standing near me reached out, but I scrambled backward, needing to escape. I couldn't let him touch me. Of that, I was certain. My mind had been shredded and ripped open. I didn't want to be touched in any other way. The floor was cold and smooth as I scurried over it, but I was stopped by a wall. At least, it felt like one. I saw nothing there, only a blue line upon the floor. The invisible wall was familiar and triggered fear. It reminded me of the box. I drew my knees up to me, trying to make myself small as I trembled. The men near me ââ¬â four of them ââ¬â were speaking in a language I didn't know. They were arguing. One kept trying to come to me, but another stopped him. That one was terrifying. His features were nothing extraordinary ââ¬â tall, with dark brown eyes and hair ââ¬â but there was something about him that made me cold all over. There was power in him, power all around him. I could feel it and see it. It reminded me of sulfur. His eyes fell on me as he spoke harshly to the others, and I cringed further. I felt certain I knew him, but he still scared me. Suddenly, another of the men exclaimed something and touched the dark-haired one's arm. This man was blond. I sensed power around him too, but it felt different. It was clean and crystalline. All four turned around, putting their backs to me as they stared at something. Nothing was there at first, then I began to see and feel it. A glowing purple orb appeared before them, becoming larger and larger. As it did, I saw it was more of a spiral, its arms whirling as it grew. The two men who didn't radiate power stepped back. If the unseen wall had let me, I too would have moved away. Out of the purple light, two black forms suddenly materialized and stepped forward. Two black figures who were somehow luminescent at the same time and had brilliant blue eyes. My own eyes widened. I might not know anything else that was going on around me, but I knew them. I knew them, and I was going to kill them. I'm not sure how I did it since there seemed to be no spark of life left within me, yet somehow, I mustered the strength to spring up and run toward them. My shrieked words were incoherent, but it didn't matter. Only their destruction did. I would rip them apart. I would make them suffer the way they'd ââ¬â Strong arms grabbed me, stopping me as surely as the wall had. It was the blond man, and his grip was like iron. ââ¬Å"Let me go!â⬠I screamed. ââ¬Å"Let me go! I'll kill them! I'll kill them both!â⬠The dark-haired man glanced back toward us. ââ¬Å"Do not let her go,â⬠he said mildly, this time in a language I understood. I fought in vain against the arms but made no progress. The dark-haired man turned to the Oneroi. ââ¬Å"This isn't your world,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"We've come for what's ours,â⬠said one of the Oneroi. ââ¬Å"You took her.â⬠ââ¬Å"I took back what was mine,â⬠the dark-haired man countered. ââ¬Å"You stole her.â⬠ââ¬Å"We won her. She came to us of her own free will.â⬠The dark-haired man snorted. Jerome, I suddenly remembered. His name was Jerome. ââ¬Å"We have different definitions of ââ¬Ëfree will,'â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"We want her back,â⬠protested the Oneroi. ââ¬Å"You're taking nothing back,â⬠countered Jerome, voice hard. ââ¬Å"Go before I change my mind.â⬠I'd gone slack while they spoke, but now my fury was renewed. I struggled again. ââ¬Å"Let me kill them!â⬠I screamed. ââ¬Å"Jerome, it's my right! Let me destroy them!â⬠Jerome turned back, maybe surprised I'd used his name. ââ¬Å"I don't think you're in any shape to kill anything.â⬠ââ¬Å"It's my right,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"After what they did ââ¬â they'll suffer like I did. I will shred them. I'll rip their souls out!â⬠ââ¬Å"They don't have souls,â⬠he said dryly. ââ¬Å"But I like your enthusiasm.â⬠He turned back to the Oneroi. ââ¬Å"So, you stole my succubus and tortured her.â⬠His voice carried that reptilian chill. It froze my blood. It made the air crackle with tension. The Oneroi shifted uncomfortably. They weren't unaffected. ââ¬Å"Because of her, our mother was recaptured,â⬠one of them said. But he didn't sound as confident or outraged as before. ââ¬Å"We are entitled to revenge.â⬠ââ¬Å"You believe insult to another justifies revenge?â⬠asked Jerome. Oh, that voice. That voice made the air grow still. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠said the Oneroi as one. ââ¬Å"Me too,â⬠replied Jerome. He didn't even move, but I felt the power flare out from him, like a torch thrown into dry tinder. It exploded ââ¬â and so did the Oneroi. Well, it was more like they imploded. That power hit them, and then ââ¬â they were no more. Just like that. ââ¬Å"Oh, Jerome,â⬠said the man holding me. ââ¬Å"Do you know what you've done?â⬠Jerome glanced back at us and shrugged. ââ¬Å"I don't like people taking my things.â⬠The swirling purple gate had never left, and now it began to grow brighter and rotate faster. ââ¬Å"Shit,â⬠said Jerome. ââ¬Å"I was hoping no one would notice.â⬠The man holding me sighed. He looked down at me, and silvery gray eyes pierced my soul. ââ¬Å"Listen to me. Do not move. Do you understand? Stay right here.â⬠When I didn't answer, he sighed again. ââ¬Å"Do you know me?â⬠Did I? Yes. The eyes. I knew the eyes. ââ¬Å"Carter.â⬠The word came out strangely on my tongue. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"You know me. Trust me. Do not move.â⬠He let go of me, waited to see what I'd do, and then walked up to join Jerome when I stayed in place. Nothing could have made me move anyway, not when I saw what came through the gate. It was monstrous. Literally. Yellow-eyed and scaly, mottled purple and gray. It had what looked like a pig's snout, and seven horns ran over its head like points on a crown. It towered over Jerome and Carter as it emerged from the gate, but the two of them stood where they were, regarding it defiantly. ââ¬Å"You destroyed my subjects,â⬠the creature growled. Its voice came from deep within its throat and made the floor vibrate. ââ¬Å"You broke the laws.â⬠ââ¬Å"Your subjects were in our realm,â⬠said Jerome. He was perfectly calm. ââ¬Å"They stole one of my people and abused her. They broke the rules.â⬠ââ¬Å"That doesn't give you the right to do what you did,â⬠came the response. ââ¬Å"They would have destroyed her if they were capable of it. Next time, keep a better watch on your employees so that they don't go causing trouble where they shouldn't.â⬠The monster's nostrils flared. ââ¬Å"I could destroy you for this.â⬠ââ¬Å"Try,â⬠said Jerome. ââ¬Å"Try taking on both of us.â⬠Those yellow eyes flicked over to Carter. A few teeth showed in the creature's mouth. I think he was smiling. ââ¬Å"An angel and a demon fighting together. It would almost be worth seeing.â⬠Heavy silence fell as everyone sized each other up. I had no sense of the monster's strength. Physical size was not proportional to power. Jerome and Carter, however, were burning like small suns, ready to burst at any moment. At last, the monster shrugged. Or did his equivalent of it. ââ¬Å"But it's been enough just to see you defend each other's honor. I will not destroy youâ⬠¦today. There will be no more assaults on my people. If there are, I won't be so forgiving.â⬠ââ¬Å"And if your people don't leave mine alone,â⬠said Jerome smoothly, ââ¬Å"I won't be as forgiving either.â⬠The creature snarled, and for a moment, I thought he might very well change his mind. He didn't. Instead, he stepped backward toward the purple light. He merged into it, vanishing to our eyes, and then the gate itself disappeared as well. ââ¬Å"He is such a fucking liar,â⬠said Jerome. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËForgiving' indeed. He knew we'd blast his scaly ass out of here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, well, I hope we never find if that's true or not,â⬠said Carter. ââ¬Å"Fighting a Morphean demon would generate paperwork even on my side.â⬠Jerome's lips twitched into a smile. ââ¬Å"Now that would be worth seeing.â⬠I looked between both of them, my fear from the near-confrontation fading. With the last of my energy, I lunged for Jerome, beating my fists against his chest. He caught them and stopped me as easily as Carter had. ââ¬Å"You should have let me do it! You should have let me destroy them! It was my right!â⬠ââ¬Å"That's what you're pissed off about? Georgie, I'm not even sure how you're still standing.â⬠ââ¬Å"It was my right,â⬠I repeated. ââ¬Å"You don't know what they did.â⬠ââ¬Å"I can make some good guesses.â⬠I stopped in my struggles, and at last, the full force of everything that had happened descended on me. My being's full depletion hit me. I sagged in his arms, and he caught me. The sights and people around me were still a little muddled, but lots of things were starting to come back. ââ¬Å"You were supposed to keep me safe,â⬠I said in a small voice. I felt my eyes grow wet. ââ¬Å"You shouldn't have let that happen ââ¬â let them take me. You're supposed to protect me.â⬠Jerome looked truly surprised and didn't respond to me immediately. I was afraid he'd get angry, but instead, he said quietly, ââ¬Å"Yes. I am. I did in the end, but ââ¬â I was late.â⬠ââ¬Å"Great apology,â⬠said Carter. Now Jerome's anger returned. ââ¬Å"I have nothing to apologize for!â⬠He turned back to me, and again, his voice was calm and patient. Almost gentle. I knew this was uncharacteristic for him. ââ¬Å"I brought you back. You're safe now. They will never harm you again. Do you understand?â⬠I nodded. ââ¬Å"Good. Now it's time to finish this.â⬠Jerome turned toward the humans. One of them was old, very old ââ¬â with dark brown skin and graying hair. His eyes were compassionate. The other man was younger, with messy hair and brown eyes that turned honey-amber when the light caught them. He was staring at me like he knew me, which wasn't a surprise because I knew him too. I didn't know how, but I did. In fact, I was beginning to realize I knew everyone in this room. Other names were coming back to me. This one man's name eluded me, though, largely because several kept popping into my head. He studied me intently, like he was trying to figure something out, and I found myself falling into those golden brown eyes. Jerome said something to the gray-haired man in that other language. I still couldn't understand it, but there was something familiar about its sounds. The old man didn't answer or move right away, and palpable tension fell over the entire room. At last the old man took a wand he was holding and began touching points on the circle upon the floor, murmuring softly as he did. When he touched the circle a fourth time, it was as though a great pressure ââ¬â one I hadn't even known was there ââ¬â was released from the room. Jerome exchanged a few curt words with the man and then turned to me. ââ¬Å"As I was saying, how you're conscious is beyond me ââ¬â but considering all the other absurd things you do, I shouldn't be surprised.â⬠He stepped toward me and pressed his fingers to my forehead. I gasped as a jolt ofâ⬠¦somethingâ⬠¦raced through me. At first, it was shocking and prickly. Then, it transformed into something sweeter and more wonderful. The most wonderful thing on earth. It filled me up, energizing me, making me whole. Until this moment, how could I have thought I was alive? The world came into greater focus, the sights grew more familiar. I staggered, not from weakness this time, but from the pure bliss of life Jerome had gifted me with. He said something to me in that other language, and I frowned, not understanding. He spoke again in my own words. ââ¬Å"Change back, Georgina. Time to go.â⬠ââ¬Å"Change to what?â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatever you want. Your current favorite, I'd imagine. Not this.â⬠His hand gestured toward my body. I examined myself for the first time. I wasn't quite as tall as him, a few inches shorter, maybe. My legs and arms were long and lean, my skin tanned from the sun. A plain ivory dress covered me, and I could see the tips of black hair falling onto my chest. I frowned. This was meâ⬠¦and yet not me. ââ¬Å"Change back, Georgina,â⬠he repeated. ââ¬Å"That's not my name,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Shake off what they've done,â⬠he said, clearly impatient. ââ¬Å"It's over. They've fogged your mind, but you can clear it. Change back, Georgina. Come back to this time.â⬠His next words were in that other language, and I shook my head angrily. ââ¬Å"I don't understand. I shouldn't be here. This is my body, but this isn't my time.â⬠He gave another command that I still didn't comprehend, and I uttered the same response. Three times we went through this, and then on the fourth, his words came through to me, perfectly understandable. I knew what he was speaking. The English language exploded in my mind, and with it, much more. I held out my hands before me, staring long and hard as though seeing them for the first time. ââ¬Å"This is my time,â⬠I murmured in English. I looked down at my long legs. A strange sense of revulsion ran through me. ââ¬Å"This is not my body.â⬠Yetâ⬠¦it was. It was, and it wasn't. With no energy, it was what I had reverted to. ââ¬Å"What's your name?â⬠he demanded. Letha. My name is Letha. ââ¬Å"Georgina,â⬠I said. And with that, I summoned the power to make my body's shape change. Slim and short, with light brown hair, and golden green eyes. The off-white homespun shift became a blue cotton dress. A moment later, I changed it to jeans and a blue shirt. Jerome glanced at Carter. ââ¬Å"See? No harm done.â⬠Carter didn't acknowledge that. Instead, he asked, ââ¬Å"So now what?â⬠ââ¬Å"Now?â⬠Jerome's gaze fell on me again. ââ¬Å"Now Georgina sleeps.â⬠ââ¬Å"What?â⬠I cried. ââ¬Å"No! Not afterâ⬠¦no. I'm never sleeping again.â⬠Jerome almost smiled before touching my forehead again. I slept.

Fairy Tales and a Dose of Reality Essay
Todayââ¬â¢s media plays a massive role in the establishment of a fantasy marriage that was first embodied in the classic tale of Cinderella. Many people are persuaded into believing that these finely crafted stories occur everyday and are very much achievable. Catherine Orenstein illustrates this in her essay ââ¬Å"Fairy Tales and a Dose of Realityâ⬠. Orenstein relates the connection of many peopleââ¬â¢s fantasies and ambitions of perfect marriages and relationships with the success of Hollywoodââ¬â¢s own interpretations of Prince Charmings and Cinderellas. However, the interpretations were not based off of pure fiction. She points out the popular T.V. series ââ¬Å"The Bacheloretteâ⬠is a satire of the entire Cinderella Story and draws many peopleââ¬â¢s attention because this is what so many of them crave. Many people however do not realize that the actual fairy tales themselves from the late 17th centuries are not at all about cliche happy endings and romance . These tales incorporate harsh truths that exist in human nature such as jealousy, greed, lying and cheating. Orenstein uses these examples to awaken people about how much are expectations and desires of romance and marriage have been manipulated and twisted over the past three hundred years into something almost unimaginable and far from reality. She puts to rest one of the most common fairy tales Cinderella by explaining how one of the original authors, Perrault, based his story off of typical aristocratic marriages in the 17th century and not from some make-believe fantasy that he wanted to entice his readers with. Orenstein closes the essay by bringing in the true history of the wedding. Weddings werenââ¬â¢t evoked by undying lust and erotic love for a partner, but rather they were established by the parents of the two families often times to settle disagreements or to spread the wealth by joining themselves together.

Difference of Athens and Han China Essay
To the question how great were the differences of classical Athens and Han china? My interpretation is that there was a huge difference in these two empires. Like there form of government, art, geography, and population. In classical Greece (9thââ¬â6th centuries BCE) the form of government is a democracy which is ââ¬Ëadministration is in the hands of, not of a few, but of the whole peopleââ¬â¢ (Pericles). Where as in Han china (206 BCE ââ¬â 220 CE) the form of government is a bureaucracy which is a body of non-elective government officials. ââ¬ËThe emperor appointed governors to each district for his domainââ¬â¢. Also in classical Greece the art was different than Han china. In Han china the art was more focused on nature, and how nature is more important, and how we should be in harmony with nature. ââ¬ËEach separate being in the universe returns to the common source. Returning to the source is serenity.ââ¬â¢(Lao-tzu ) where as in classical Greece the art was more focused on the ideal man. ââ¬ËThe world is full of wonders but nothing is more wonderful than man.ââ¬â¢(Sophocles). The geography was also completely different. In classical Greece the area was surrounded by water and the empire was smaller than the Han Empire . And the population was different where classical Greece had a total population 315,000 people. Han china had a total population 65,000,000 people. These are the reason that are why there was a huge difference in classical Greece and Han china.
Pregnancy, Birth and the Newborn: Focus on Fasd
Running Head: FETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDER Pregnancy, Birth and the Newborn: Focus on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder SWHB 405: Human Behavior in the Social Environment 1 ABSTRACT From conception to birth, the motherââ¬â¢s role in bringing to life and nurturing a healthy baby is paramount. Factors such as the motherââ¬â¢s biological, psychological and social environment play important roles in determining the wellbeing of a child. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, an irreversible condition in children caused by maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy will be discussed. Its biological, psychological and societal implications will be deliberated and recommendations of interventions by Social Workers in alleviating the problem will be suggested. Key words: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Child Development Introduction All human life begins with a fertilized egg known as a zygote. By the eighth week, the zygote is transformed into a fetus which has m ost of its organs formed. After about 9 months (or 38 weeks) of going through transformation within the motherââ¬â¢s womb, the mother delivers a bouncing baby boy or girl into the world.During this time it is imperative that special care and attention is given to the mother and the child that she is carrying. Prenatal care ensures that the mother receives the much needed medical attention, nutritional advice and a positive life style tips. Particular attention is given unusual physiological and medical manifestations which could signal an array of life threatening situations for the mother and unborn child. The culmination of a successful pregnancy is the birth of a baby. Newborns weigh an average between 5. 5 and 9. pounds and they are awake and alert in first hours of life. Newborns begin learning their environment immediately and one of the things they internalize is developing a connection with the motherââ¬â¢s voice. The six states that a baby maintains are: quiet alert, active alert, crying state, drowsiness, quiet sleep, and active sleep (Ashford & Lecroy, 2012). Babies oscillate from an awakening curious baby, peak at crying when uncomfortable, and dip through to active sleep. These changes may occur slowly or rapidly throughout the course of any given day.Consequently, knowledge about this this critical life stage, helps parents to be better equipped to cope with and nurture the newborn. Risk factors during pregnancy and at birth Various physiological changes in a pregnant mother may cause or indicate a risk for both mother and child. A case in point is bleeding in the first trimester or late in the pregnancy which could mean possible loss of the child or neurological issues. In some instances, natural toxins could build in the motherââ¬â¢s bodies leading to high blood pressure and weight gain which may be fatal to the mother (Ashford & Lecroy, 2012).Further, an increased weight of the mother could bring on diabetes in the child, while low we ight of the child could be a precursor to mental retardation. Biological factors that may affect the fetusââ¬â¢ development during pregnancy include the motherââ¬â¢s age, the number of children prior and how far apart she has had each child (Boyce, 2010). Environmental factors, such as living conditions, diet deficiencies, and the emotional well-being of the mother can all affect the baby during its 38 week development.Pregnant women should be mindful of substances ingested during pregnancy as these are subsequently ingested by the fetus and affect its development. This is exemplified by studies demonstrating that women who drink caffeine tend to have a lower birth rate than women who avoid caffeine (Ashford & Lecroy, 2012). Other substances that could affect fetal development by causing birth deformities, premature births and possible hyperactivity include tobacco, over the counter medications, hormones and alcohol.Prenatal care there has been shown to dramatically improve th e chances of having a healthy baby. Nevertheless, there is a possibility of certain complications during birth can have lasting repercussions on a childââ¬â¢s life. An example is anoxia, a deficiency of oxygen during birth that could lead to the newborn developing cerebral palsy. Alcoholââ¬â¢s relevance in pregnancy, birth and the newborn Alcohol is a teratogen; an agent or factor that induces or increases the incidence of abnormal prenatal development (Shiel, 2010).Consumption of alcohol during pregnancy is manifested in a continuum of disabilities known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) (Warren & Murray, in press). The most severe form of this spectrum referred to as fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). An alarming statistic from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) studies shows that 0. 2 to 2 cases per 1000 babies are born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Since FASD presents a broad spectrum of symptoms some of which are ââ¬Å"less severeâ⬠, it rem ains challenging to diagnose (Fleisher, 2010). As a result, FASD among children is either misdiagnosed or remains undetected. On the other hand, it is relatively easier to identify the key diagnostic features of FAS are they are better established. FASD is prevalent worldwide because alcohol is so widely accepted and used in so many cultures. The teratogenic effects of alcohol were not established until the second half of the 20th century when pediatrician, Paul Lemoine, in France in 1967 and two American pediatric dysmorphologists, Kenneth Lyons Jones and David Smith in 1973, independently documented the pattern of deficits resulting from heavy prenatal alcohol exposure (Warren & Murray, in press).Alcohol was attributed because the children in both settings had common patterns of deficits and it was observed that all of the birth mothers had been diagnosed with alcohol use disorders Biological manifestations The teratogenic effects of alcohol adversely affect the physical developmen t of the fetus and the child. Newborns and children with FAS generally exhibit stunted growth (CDC. Gov, 1983). A distinguishing feature of children with severe FASD and FAS is facial and limb dysmorphology. These children are generally shorter in stature and weigh less than their peers (Warren & Murray, in press). The cardinal or discriminating features include short palpebral fissures (eye opening), an elongated and hypoplastic philtrum (groove between nose and upper lip), and a thin upper vermillion lip border or hypoplastic ââ¬Å"cupidââ¬â¢s bowâ⬠. Other features include a low nasal bridge, epicanthal folds (skin folds covering inner corner of the eye), minor ear anomalies, and micrognathia (abnormal smallness of the jaws). Psychological consequencesFacial and limb dysmorphology in children affected by FASD and FAS may cause the child is usually aware that something is ââ¬Å"differentâ⬠about him or her and thus affect their psychological wellbeing. Additionally, c hildren with FASD have cognitive challenges leading to a myriad of problems such as the following: memory loss, impaired motor skills, neurosensory hearing loss, impaired visual and spatial skills, intellectual impairment, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, problems with reasoning and judgment and an inability to appreciate consequences of actions (Wacha & Obrzut, 2007).Treatment and schooling can be very difficult for a child facing these challenges since their greatest challenge is learning and retaining information. Subsequently, the child may experience depression which can result in self-destructive behavior such as substance abuse, inappropriate sexual behavior, and suicide Societal implications Families are affected immensely when a child is born with FASD/FAS since he/she may exhibit anti-social behavior including an exaggerated startle response, poor wake and sleep patterns, impulsiveness, temper tantrums, lying and stealing (Fleisher, 2010).Moreover, schools, local health care systems, childcare and social services, and the justice system are usually ill-equipped to address the problems presented by FASD. As a result; a person with FASD may experience mental health problems, disrupted schooling, and involvement with crime, substance abuse, and dependent living and employment difficulties throughout their lifetime. As previously stated, the broad spectrum of manifestations of FASD makes it difficult to diagnose.Consequently, individuals suffering from FASD may not be properly diagnosed and are likely to be labeled social misfits and may spend a troubled life on the margins of society thus creating a monumental emotional burden on society (Wacha & Obrzut, 2007). Interventions to aid those affected by FASD These physical, mental, social, learning and behavioral limitations experienced by individuals with FASD have possible lifelong implications. Fortunately, there is help for both the individuals and their families provided by Social Service age ncies in form of resources and assistance needed to have a good quality of life.Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (1975), school aged children with disabilities (including those diagnosed with FAS) are provided with reasonable accommodations including untimed tests, sitting in front of the class, modified homework and the provision of necessary services and often the implementation of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). An IEP details services that will be provided to assist the child in learning and may include services like Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, and/or the provision of a classroom aide. These individuals often have social workers or case managers working with them to ensure that the services documented in the IEPââ¬â¢s are being provided and working effectively. Implications of FASD on Social Work FASD provides opportunities for Social Workers to play an important role in impacting positive change. Soc ial Workers could take the lead in screening for alcohol use among women of child-bearing age and educate them about the FASD (Boyce, 2010).Women who choose to continue drinking should be encouraged to use contraceptives to reduce the likelihood of giving birth to a child with FASD. Social Workers should also be actively involved in nutrition education to ensure that pregnant mothers are following balanced diet for optimum fetal development. Nutrition education should especially target participants of the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) as these populationsââ¬â¢ income may limit their food choices.FASD often have significant lifelong deficits in functional life skills that can lead to problems with day to day functioning. In adulthood, these deficits can be manifested in mental health difficulties, disrupted job experiences, trouble with the law, substance abuse and difficulties with independent living. Hence Social Workers play the important role of advocating for individuals affected by FASD, helping them to navigate their immediate environment and linking them with support services (Warren & Murray, in press).Prevention of FASD is of great importance and this implies that Social Workers have the responsibility of mobilizing campaigns against drinking during pregnancy. This can be done through community education, incorporating medical personnel in research and preventive practice as well as holding alcohol producers accountable for posting health warning labels on publicity items. Conclusion Maternal alcohol use is a worldwide phenomenon that indiscriminately affects families and children of all ethnicities in all societies.Fortunately, it is possible to classify and tackle the treatment problems raised by individuals with FASD. The hope is that with continued research, education, and support from Social Service agencies, this problem can be prevented. While resources are available to help individu als and their families, it is important to know that the best treatment of FASD is prevention. It is not yet known the specific timing, frequency and quantity of alcohol use throughout the gestational period that are responsible FASD and FAS.Drinking early in the gestational period, before the woman even knows she is pregnant may present special risks for the developing embryo. Thus strategies to prevent alcohol use in pregnancy need to take into consideration that the prevalence of drinking by women of child-bearing age is on the rise in many parts of the world and most pregnancies are not planned.
